DATED MAILART CALLS
last updated May 13, 2008

Selection for inclusion on this page is based upon a number of criteria. I have instituted a general review of the calls on this page purely as a means to aid those new initiates who have little or no experience with mailart. Some of the considerations that I use are if the call is targeted at visual art, whether the work will be exhibited, if there will be documentation, and if there is a known history of coordinating. If you like to explore, submit to any call purely for the sake of play and with no expectations.

one perf   - unknown or insufficient information given
two perfs  - may lack some of the qualities of a complete call
three perfs - good call
four perfs - known coordinator, or with artistamp history
five perfs - exceptional

If you have a call that you wish to have considered for listing here and it includes: a deadline to be received, an exhibition in a public space and mailed documentation for participants, please send it to me at the following address and include “mail art call” in the subject line. Listing is not automatic.

Through my Window  (five perfs)
Theme:
A call for an international collaborative mail art project that includes students of all ages. It aims to promote Mail-Art as a universal means of communication that brings people together and promotes Visual Arts. We would be honored to have students and professors of your school participate with us.
The project aims to introduce students to this form of artistic expression, considered by many artists to be the most accessible means of spreading artwork. The written or printed word is influential upon the Mail-Art concept. Poetry, literature, information materials in general, generates images. And visual image is in fact – language.
The project proposes promoting multiculturalism as a form of respect, knowledge and understanding of each city’s specifics, these being perceived as dynamic part of a modern world. Each country is unique in its history, geography, economy, culture and habits. The project puts the participants in position to offer information on their living environment. Mail-Art is one of the most important movements of this century. Maybe because it is not just a movement, but also behavior.
a. The project addresses students any age, from kindergarten through students of the vocational schools, but also everybody interested in art, in Romania as well as art related schools from cities in brotherhood with Timisoara, because they represent the most mobile and open-to-new social segment.
b. The project also addresses teachers willing to apply themselves in educating the youth’s from a cultural values point of view and experiments in postal art, as an alternative form of visual education.
Objectives: The different schools’ works will be summarized and presented on a web page, (also comprising a Blog spot) - archive of the participants’ creation. The web site will offer permanent and efficient communication through a discussion forum, students being able to assess different works, on the Internet as well as in the exhibitions. The blog becomes a means of personal contact and knowledge between students and professors.
Activities:
1. Communication between professors and students, through the Internet. The works will be made the object of a series of traveling exhibitions, opening in every participating school / city. Classical mail, as well as E-mail are the most efficient ways of spreading the artwork. Every submitted work will be printed and presented in these exhibitions. The project journal will be Edited and distributed to the participants.
2. The project’s web page – the virtual exhibition
3. The project’s documents (diplomas, awards, the project journal)

Technique: free – collage, photography, painting, mixed media
Size/format: Post cards will not exceed A4.
Please include the following info on the back:
Name and Surname
Age / Grade
School
Country
Guiding Teacher/ Professor

Documentation: Every participant will receive project documents - Participation Diploma, CD; and there will be a catalogue for each school.
Exhibition: Works will be exhibited as they arrive from March 1, 2008 through June 15, 2008.

Portraits  (three perfs)
On September 12, 2006, I started a project titled, "A Face A Day". I've drawn a face inspired by someone, something, alive, dead, make believe.... each and every day since September 12, 2006. These drawings are created on a small piece of linoleum and then eventually cut out and printed. To date, I have 74 images printed up with the remainder of the images just waiting to be cut out. As I print these images I usually print a few extra onto postcard weight pieces. Some make it into the mail, others sit around my studio waiting for a chance to take a trip through the postal system.
I've been fascinated with mailart my whole life and thought this would be a great opportunity to exchange work with other mail artists.
In keeping with my "A Face A Day" project, I'd like to exchange postcards with your version of a portrait.
Once again the subject of the portrait is up to your interpretation.
Size: Postcard
Please include the date of creation along with the image, your full address, email address and if you would like, a link to your site.

Atlas Postcards  (four perfs)
Theme:
The subject matter is up to you, it can be about you or the area you live in. `Tis nothing too complex, I'm basically destroying/altering books and I have a few atlases. The idea is you tell me where in the world you come from and I'll either email you a scan of the page or send you the actual page depending on which inspires you the most.
Technique: you can then doodle, scribble, alter and generally create a POSTCARD sized masterpiece which is then posted back to me and attached to what's left of the original atlas.
Media: Non-arty people also welcome to participate, it doesn't matter if you can't draw/paint/college, written word (poems, stories,
thoughts) are also just as “artistic”. (What's really important here is that it's actually being posted from the country on the map page).
Documentation: I'm photographing the postcards as they arrive, and I'll be documenting the reconstruction of the atlas as a general part of my project - photo's, drawings etc.
Exhibition: The final piece will hopefully be displayed at my degree exhibition in June this year.
Please email me if you want to take part in this project and I'll send you scans and give you my mailing address - Laura: lonesomeaesthetic@btinternet.com
Cut off date for contacting me: June 1, 2008

This is a mail art call inviting your creative visual responses to the theme of the “Thumb,” that thick first digit of the human hand. Whether it’s thumbs up, thumbs down, or all thumbs, this art will explore the various connotations of the thumb, with irony, with humor, or in all seriousness. Exhibition: In the true spirit of mail art we want your postcards to continue their communication journey off the blog and into the physical world with an exhibition at a local venue here in California (to be announced). At the exhibit we will encourage audience interaction in the form of written response to the art. Then the postcards will move on to – who knows? There is also the possibility that some of the images will be referenced on the blog and/or in the written thesis.

Burlesque  (four perfs)
Theme:
What is Burlesque?
1 : a literary or dramatic work that seeks to ridicule by means of grotesque exaggeration or comic imitation
2 : mockery usually by caricature
3 : theatrical entertainment of a broadly humorous often earthy character consisting of short turns, comic skits, and sometimes striptease acts. Burlesque is a direct descendant of the Comedia dell'arte where principal characters would carry a "burle"-a stick with a padded end- with which they would slap the other players for comic effect (the origin of "slapstick" comedy). Burlesque performers often create elaborate sets with lush, colorful costumes, mood-appropriate music, and dramatic lighting. Burlesque is a style of entertainment that encompasses pastiche, parody, and wit. Send me some Burlesque mailart...

Joan Brossa’s poetic magic   (four perfs)
Theme:
Send us your little hommage to the Catalan artist Joan Brossa, commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death. ”If I couldn’t write, I’d be a warrior in the euphoric times, and a magician in the passive ones. Being a poet includes both of them.” Joan Brossa. J. Brossa incorporates two of the fundamental traditions of the modern poetry, in the way Octavio Paz defined it on ‘Los hijos del Limo’ (Limo’s children), in 1974: “Magic and politics, secretic tradition and revolutionary tradition. Joan Brossa always compared magic and illusionism with poetry. He fought against everything that repressed the desires of spiritual and material freedom.”

Merzwalk08   (four perfs)
Theme:
Walk outside, completely around the place you live. The path you follow can be any shape or size. You may walk counterclockwise or clockwise, fast or slow, alone or within a group, or holding the hand of someone you love. You can do it during the night or day, barefoot or shod. But you must go out and come back in through the same door (or window, if that's your pleasure). During your walk, be mindful of the ground under your feet, watch the sidewalk, pay attention to the street, be conscious of the dirt and the pavement. Also, during your walk, pick up a piece of litter* or trash, preferably made from paper or any other flat material that can fit into an envelope. Note: "Litter is a waste type consisting of any tangible personal property which has been unlawfully scattered and or abandoned in a public place (usually outdoors)." Wikipedia
Use the found item in a work of art. Or designate the item as ready-made. In either case, put your art in an envelope, or, if you'd like, affix it to a postcard. Alternatively: describe your merzwalk using words or pictures. After it has dried, send it to Merzwalk08.
Only three submissions to Merzwalk08 per artist. But you may make as many merzwalks for yourself as you want and do it as frequently as you like.
Documentation will include a catalogue that will be sent to all Merzwalk08 participants.
There will be a show in January 2009.
