DATED MAILART CALLS last updated February 4, 2010
Selection for inclusion on this page is based upon a number of criteria. I have instituted a general review of the calls on this page purely as a means to aid those new initiates who have little or no experience with mailart. Some of the considerations that I use are if the call is targeted at visual art, whether the work will be exhibited, if there will be documentation, and if there is a known history of coordinating. If you like to explore, submit to any call purely for the sake of play and with no expectations.
one perf - unknown or insufficient information given two perfs - may lack some of the qualities of a complete call three perfs - good call four perfs - known coordinator, or with artistamp history five perfs - exceptional
If you have a call that you wish to have considered for listing here and it includes: a deadline to be received, an exhibition in a public space and mailed documentation for participants, please send it to me at the following address and include “mail art call” in the subject line. Listing is not automatic.

The Last Post (five perfs) Landscape artist Kane Cunningham has used his credit card to buy a house that is about to fall into the sea. A bungalow at Knipe Point in Scarborough, North Yorkshire – near the scene of the infamous Holbeck Hotel cliff collapse 16 years ago has been condemned after a fresh landslip.
Cunningham states: "I have bought a house that will be the next one to fall over the cliff. It feels like I have no choice. I’m going to rig the house with cameras and film the last sunrise before nature claims its bounty. It’s the perfect site-specific art installation - a stark reminder of lost dreams, financial disaster and threatening sealevels. It’s global recession and global warming encapsulated. This little house is feet away from the edge of the cliff – it can go at any moment. The idea is to create an artwork on a scale never been seen before in North Yorkshire and to stimulate within the imagination of the public the idea that this house falling into the sea can become a work of art. If the aim of art is to stimulate discussion and debate on issues, then surely this will get people talking. My work has always been about understanding the social and political context of landscape; the house is just a development of these ideas".
Cunningham who bought the house on his credit card for Ł3,000 said, 'the house was worth over Ł150,000 two years ago, now it is worth just a fraction of the original price. The purchase of this house on my credit card is a deliberate financial transaction suggesting the link to credit, sub prime mortgages, property ownership, debt, loans, the financial markets, property speculation, boom and bust'.
One idea, which has emerged recently as a consequence of the work, is to invite people to send me mail art and letters on any subject, these will be pinned to a wall as part of the overall artwork, then destroyed as the house disappears. So who knows what they may contain! Because "Destruction and creation have often gone hand in hand in the art world", this project is called "The Last Post", as the address will one day cease to exist and so it’s a rare opportunity to participate in an original and unique work of art.
Finally "The House" in many ways epitomizes the decade, of unprecedented greed, of lies and deceit, the art market, credit debt, war and conflict across the world. It’s a symbol that can be interpretive in many ways. The timing of the press release is deliberate, just after Copenhagen and just before Christmas when all focus is on the home, when families come together and when we all reflect upon things we feel are important.
Documentation: Just after Christmas we will have a webcam to see the sunrise and possible destruction of the house as it goes over the cliff, so please visit the site again to see new work being produced as I go along. To include video, digital photographs, paintings, prints, sculptures and site specific work within the house as I physically deconstruct the building over the next few weeks. Artists from across all disciplines can contact me to discuss the project, though I am particularly interested in new exciting ideas and possibilities from anyone with a big idea. Heebee Jeebeeland in the 4th Dimension (four perfs) Theme: When I was a kid, there was an old cartoon I saw many times on TV. While a child was sleeping, the unusual wallpaper all over his room came to life and began to dance back and forth, up and down in a rather fanciful symmetry accompanied by a sort of goofy graveyard mischief music. LIMIT, EXCHANGE, SIGN (five perfs) Theme: A tribute for the city of Portogruaro through a project involving art through mail. The keywords chosen as the theme are the motif of its foundation, joined in a common flow. Exchange - not only of goods but also of colours and scents, artistic and architectural influences, mutual knowledge, therefore culture. Sign - a condition of consent expressed in gesture, the conclusion of an agreement, a trace superimposed on many others: whose meaning is beyond the sum of the parts. MOURNFUL DEMON - SPIRIT OF BANISHMENT (LOVE STORY) (five perfs) Theme: "Fruits of our own fantasy – that’s what we can love truly and worship..."
This is a mail-art project devoted to 200 year anniversary of Russian poet of the 19th century Michael Lermontov. The image of Demon is one of the most important in Lermonov`s art. His Demon is an angel banished from the sky but not accepted by the earth. Obsessed, impassioned, rejected by everybody rushing over the sinful earth between the good and the evil. Demon is doomed to create the evil but his heart is opened for love. The image of Demon is a personification of the inner world of Lermontov himself who was killed in a duel in 1841 at the age of 27. Lermontov's Demon is the solitude and the estrangement, the anxiety and the depravity and at the same time the intellect and the craft. The image of Demon is infinitely contradictory and many-sided. Many poets, painters and composers addressed to the topic of demonism in their art. The basis of this mail-art project is a peculiar historical art parallel of Lermontov`s Demon with the creative process of Russian talented painter Michael Vrubel which he had at the beginning of 20th century working over his masterpieces devoted to the image of Demon. Exhibition: Kazan, Actor’s House. November 2010. Format: free. Technique: free. Documentation to all participants. Deadline to be received: October 1, 2010.

ALL THAT JAZZ !!! & STILL NO FREEDOM ??? (five perfs) Theme: This will be the new FRIOUR project. Personally I don't know any music that embodies more the thirst for freedom than jazz music. Jazz includes the notions of improvisations and excitement. It liberated the soul and hearts of many, opened new roads and ways of playing music and listening to music. In recent years I've become a huge jazz fan and became even friends with a few Belgian jazz musicians, attending concerts and festivals as much as I could. Despite all that jazz there is little room for improvisation in business life, personal life and society as a whole. Do people need a worldwide crisis to be controlled? Blow all fear away and send your contributions for the next Friour Review issue. Free medium. Maximum size: A4. Info: Signsstones@yahoo.com http://friour.multiply.com Deadline to be received: December 31, 2010.
