DATED MAILART CALLS last updated August 27, 2008
Selection for inclusion on this page is based upon a number of criteria. I have instituted a general review of the calls on this page purely as a means to aid those new initiates who have little or no experience with mailart. Some of the considerations that I use are if the call is targeted at visual art, whether the work will be exhibited, if there will be documentation, and if there is a known history of coordinating. If you like to explore, submit to any call purely for the sake of play and with no expectations.
one perf - unknown or insufficient information given two perfs - may lack some of the qualities of a complete call three perfs - good call four perfs - known coordinator, or with artistamp history five perfs - exceptional
If you have a call that you wish to have considered for listing here and it includes: a deadline to be received, an exhibition in a public space and mailed documentation for participants, please send it to me at the following address and include “mail art call” in the subject line. Listing is not automatic.

Joan Brossa’s poetic magic (four perfs) Theme: Send us your little hommage to the Catalan artist Joan Brossa, commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death. ”If I couldn’t write, I’d be a warrior in the euphoric times, and a magician in the passive ones. Brossa incorporates two of the fundamental traditions of the modern poetry, in the way Octavio Paz defined it on ‘Los hijos del Limo’ (Limo’s children), in 1974: “Magic and politics, secretic tradition and revolutionary tradition. Joan Brossa always compared magic and illusionism with poetry. He fought against everything that repressed the desires of spiritual and material freedom.” Size: 12x18 cm maximum Organized by Comicactiva S.C.G. and GONG defending human rights. "Particulates Matter" (four perfs) Particulate Matter (PM) in the air can cause or worsen lung disease and heart disease, especially in the elderly and very young. In the USA, tens of thousands of people die prematurely due to PM every year, and countless more suffer. PM is a much more serious problem in developing nations with fewer pollution controls. Please help increase awareness about PM by participating in the mail art exhibition "Particulates Matter". Artwork will be exhibited along with a scale model of a human hair (80 cm diameter) to emphasize how tiny these particles are. Art can be on the theme of PM itself (depicting or made with PM), PM sources (diesel exhaust, wood smoke, industry, etc.), the health effects of PM (asthma, heart attack, stroke), or artwork can simply be 'a breath of fresh air' (no theme, but still meeting size requirements). Any technique may be used – collage, photography, drawing, painting, artist's stamps, sculpture, assemblage, and so on. Documentation will be provided online and all art received will be posted at: http://scottrayrandall.blogspot.com/ An exhibition is to be held in Sacramento, California on Earth Day 2009.
