DATED MAILART CALLS
last updated April 14, 2011

Selection for inclusion on this page is based upon a number of criteria. I have instituted a general review of the calls on this page purely as a means to aid those new initiates who have little or no experience with mailart. Some of the considerations that I use are if the call is targeted at visual art, whether the work will be exhibited, if there will be documentation, and if there is a known history of coordinating. If you like to explore, submit to any call purely for the sake of play and with no expectations.

one perf   - unknown or insufficient information given
two perfs  - may lack some of the qualities of a complete call
three perfs - good call
four perfs - known coordinator, or with artistamp history
five perfs - exceptional

If you have a call that you wish to have considered for listing here and it includes: a deadline to be received, an exhibition in a public space and mailed documentation for participants, please send it to me at the following address and include “mail art call” in the subject line. Listing is not automatic. Calls with a “money” element will not be published here, nor will calls that provide only a blog posting for combined exhibition and documentation.

A NOTE TO STAMP ARTISTS:
You might like to check out a new forum for artistamps, cinderellas, faux postage (whatever you call it).

The Cinderella Stamps Forum is a space provided by Colin Edwards and others to discuss creation, selling, trading, buying, history and other aspects of non-philatelic stamps. Drop in and look around. Easy to join.

JAPAN

I am passing this on.  I can only assume that Tokyo is providing shelter for those who were affected by the most tragic consequences of this catastrophe. Do not expect a formal exhibition or documentation. I will list this for a few months (or more). Please be kind.

Send sympathetic and encouraging greetings to survivors. Brent Leopold was good enough to hunt up the complete addresses of a few of the shelters that we could send mail art to. It is true that our postal services always need postal codes for their machines to scan, they don't have "humans" reading the addresses, so here are three complete addresses:

Out of Mythology to Methodology  (four perfs)
Theme:
Please send us artworks on Theme: "state attributes’’ - Passport, Banknotes, state emblem, Flag, etc.
We are interesting in your viewpoint around state attributes in place of free society conditions.  We are an internationalist art-group from Tbilisi, Georgia. Currently we are working on a project. Our playing-ground is determined by our search for new ways of life. In this case we are demanding more from the aesthetic disciplines which we feel should become more politicized before any citizenship. We hope this will promote individualized subjectivity through various social relations in everyday life.
- The motivating intent of the project is rejection of all forms of oppression and promotion of personal freedoms.
- The task of project is to disclose how humans can work to be free, together with others.
Format: Any format that will fit into an envelope.

No returns-all works stay in group archive.

Apple Crunch!  (four perfs)
Theme:
The City of Argentan is holding its fourth exhibition of mail art. The 2010/2011 call is based on the theme: Eat the Apple!  The apple is so familiar to our tastes and our Norman landscape holds more meaning and implication than we think! The forbidden fruit is also good for drawing on a sheet of paper as it is to eat. As a sketch, eat the apple of the eyes! In apple of love, it awakens our taste buds with its sweet red. When an apple fell on Newton's head, it inspired the laws of gravity! But the apple is also a source of inspiration for our artists. What is a Cézanne still life without the apple? It is everywhere in art and performances!
The number of designs is limited to two per participant.
Technology/Format: free - no perishable or dangerous objects ...
Only original works of mail art are accepted, no photocopies.
No fee, no jury, no returns.
Participants agree to allow reproduction and public exhibition of artwork by the organizers of the event.
The address, stamp and postmark must always be applied directly on the work.
Exhibition: in the City of Argentan. All works exhibited.
Documentation: Mailed to all participants and also online at

A BOOK ABOUT DEATH (ABAD)  (four perfs)
Theme:
Death.  Phoenix based artist Patricia Sahertian has organized an ABAD exhibition for May 2011. Following the tradition that started with the original A Book About Death show at the Emily Harvey Foundation in New York City in 2009, this new exhibit will feature postcards from around the world and have an added feature: small mementos. The ABAD concept was brought to life by Paris based artist Matthew Rose who was influenced by the mail art work of Ray Johnson from the 1950s and 60s, and by Ray's New York Correspondance School. ABAD has blossomed into an international phenomenon and has shown in Brazil, Belgium, Wales, New York, California, Texas, Long Island, Omaha, South Carolina, Louisiana and New Hampshire. Two exhibits are upcoming soon: Italy and now, Phoenix, Arizona.
Media/Technique/Size: one work on paper, post card size: approximately 6x4 inches (either vertical or horizontal)
any medium, original art or reproduction is acceptable.
In addition to your mailed postcard, email jpgs (no larger than 600 x 400 px) of your work (for posting on this blog), with your name and your website/blog or contact link. You may also tell your death story in the email.
As an optional twist to this call, you are invited to send a memento through the mail. Mementos play an important role in our remembering. A simple thing like a toothbrush, a letter, a toy, a paperclip, or a swatch of fabric, can be a fond reminder of a lost loved one. So please also send a tiny memento, if you like, and we will display it with your artwork. See memento guidelines on our website.
No returns.  No sales.
Artwork will be permanently archived.

Economies of Resistance: Call for mail-art   (four perfs)
Theme:
Open call for designs articulating your visions for reform and social change, including proclamations, manifestos and more. The project aims to proposition positive changes to neo-liberal dogma whilst generating dialogue between different opinions involved. Interested artists are urged to develop an economy of means, offering cultural agency in accessible and proliferative form for an age where culture is often consumed in bite-sized pieces.
Size:  For consistence, unity and for ease of postage, transportation and dissemination works are requested to be no larger than A4 size (210 x297mm).
There are no submission fees, no judges and no work will be for sale.
Original works cannot be returned.
Conceptual works or related performance proposals are welcome.

Living slow - Living fast  (three perfs)
Theme: Long, long ago, Aesopus told us about "The tortoise and the hare". Who wins? Some people want to fly into space, some people want to escape to the country. Make your own choice, maybe you want to do both. Who doesn't? The town I live in has recently been certified as a slow city -- Cittaslow.
http://www.cittaslow.net
Chaam http://www.alphen-chaam.nl/eCache/DEF/55/465.html
"Fired by the success and support for Slow Food the Italians set about initiating the Slow Cities movement. Slow cities are characterised by a way of life that supports people to live slow. Traditions and traditional ways of doing things are valued. These cities stand up against the fast-lane, homogenised world so often seen in other cities throughout the world. Slow cities have less traffic, less noise, fewer crowds...
http://www.slowmovement.com
At the same time we are invited to be an astronaut, literally a Flying Dutchman. "The Dutch people have always been bold entrepreneurs. They were among the first to conquer the world seas in the 16th and 17th Century in search for trade. Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM <http://www.klm.com/travel/generic/index.html>) was one of the first commercial airlines founded in 1919, and the one of the very few that still exists. Space Experience Curacao (SXC) will add a historic dimension to the legacy of the Flying Dutchman by facilitating galactic travel and transport and thereby helping to open space for new benefits for mankind.

LISTS  (four perfs)
Theme:
The Museum of Instant Images invites you to participate in the Mail Art project on the theme of "lists". The essential nature of lists, poets who list things in their works and painters who accumulate things in their paintings. ...  Umberto Eco: The list is the origin of culture. It's part of the history of art and literature. What does culture want? To make infinity comprehensible. It also wants to create order -- not always, but often. And how, as a human being, does one face infinity? How does one attempt to grasp the incomprehensible? Through lists, through catalogs, through collections in museums and through encyclopedias and dictionaries. We also have completely practical lists -- the shopping list, the will, the menu -- that are also cultural achievements in their own right...
To accomplish Eco's infinity of lists, send me your own list, accumulation, enumeration, collection, series, account or frame, etc. in text and image.

Not big territory of the island changed for ages the events connected with important moments of Russian history. Sviyazhsk was pagan, orthodox, revolutionary, GULAG. Every period left its marks on the island. Today’s renascence of the city-island is a mark of penitence, respect of contemporaries to own culture no matter how it was. Sviyazhsk of today we can call the place of pray (here goes active reconstruction of old churches and monasteries), the place of art (it is a favorite place of rest and work of painters), the place of songs (in May 2011 the first festival of chamber chorus will pass here), the place of tourism (all conditions for comfort visit of the island for tourists from the whole world are made).

BULGAR. COMING BACK TO THE WHOLE SOURCES   (four perfs)
Theme:
"And arrived in front of me Bulgar-city" (G. Tukai). Bolgar-city is situated in Tatarstan (Russia) on the Volga river. It is the capital of one of the early states of Eastern Europe. Within the city, surrendered by barrage and moat, the memorials of the 13-14th centuries are situated. Among them are the Eastern and Northern Mausoleums, burial-vault of the Khan, the Small Minaret, sauna of the Khan and the main mosque. One of  the pillars of the mosque is reconstructed. They call it the Pillar of wishes. On the day of celebration of the acceptance of Islam by Volzhskaya Bolgaria (21 of May 922) on the whole ground of Bolgar, a large number of pilgrims arrive and each of them has the possibility to make his wish by touching this pillar. In the past, Bolgar attracted many creative people of Russia such as famous painters A. Savrasov, I Shishkin and B. Urmanche, who left to the world their works made in Bulgar. Great Tatar poet G. Tukai devoted to these places many of his lyrical lines.

Theme:
Hommage to Harry Martinson. Fuhrmann meets Bergmann: Thorsten Fuhrmann, Huglfing, Germany, and Ottmar Bergmann, Gylsboda Art-Center, Sweden, invite you to take part in the Mailart project "working worlds“. "Men in slouch-hats grew up out of the ground. Wherever we children went to play, stony precipices opened out before them, dark and crawling with men carrying dynamite in their hands. Their mouths were full of oaths and songs and tremendous affirmations. There was a thundering about the lives of these men. They moved about downthere in those stony ravines like the brigands of the Rockies. They bored with iron rods into the rock, drove them down with the sledge-hammers, and then fired. "Blasting"!" they yelled, and clung together on the ledge. Then there was a roar below, and all the buildings of the settlement trembled. It was like this very day all day. Everywhere was forbidden ground.Everywhere the landscape was split up. hollowed out. Stone-pits yawned in the woods. There was a smell of coal-dust and oil, and steam from the winches hung in a cloud round the winch-sheds.!"(Harry Martinson)

(ABAD) "A BOOK ABOUT DEATH: The Ties That Bind"  (four perfs)
Theme:
Artists are invited to create their own book pages that illustrate their unique interpretations of THE TIES THAT BIND all living things universally through death. They may also choose to celebrate the ties that now bind all ABAD artists throughout the world (courtesy of Ray Johnson and Matthew Rose). Any interpretation is welcome. All these pages will then be bound together in a handmade book. A BOOK ABOUT DEATH will finally become a hand-bound book produced by global artists.   This new exhibit will feature for the first time, work from worldwide artists that are actual pages like Ray Johnson originally created in 1963, and NOT postcards.
Size/Technique/Media: Create a one- or two-sided piece on a 5.5” x 8.5” (Digest Size) sheet of paper (PAPER–not card stock).
Format:  may be vertical or horizontal. It does NOT have to say "A Book About Death" anywhere on it.
Submit two copies—one will be hung on the walls of the gallery and the other will be bound into a handmade volume, thereby furnishing an Omega to the Alpha of the Unbound Book of the original show. The book will be handmade
and bound by an original ABAD artist, LuAnn T. Palazzo http://thedesigndiva.net and also displayed at the exhibition. The two pages are then to be mailed to the gallery in Bay Shore, NY for exhibition.
Artists can include any information about themselves on the pages, front or back. The exhibition organizers only ask that you submit good work, worthy of an interesting and exciting page in this global book.
Exhibition: July 31 –September 2, 2011 Second Avenue Firehouse Gallery, Bay Shore, New York. The reception: Saturday, 13 August 2011.
Documentation: After the show comes down, I will also make books from the displayed pages in hopes that the MoMA, NY will want them! The exhibited book(s) will go into the permanent collection of the Gallery.

The SECREt eXCHANGE  (four perfs)
Theme:
Please send Secrets to both the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea.
SECRET EXCHANGE is an ongoing project, first publicly implemented in 1976, it will be continuing into the future in morphing form, guise, disguise.
EXHIBITION: Your ENVELOPES containing secrets are for display in the gallery exhibitions.  Gallery visitors may select from these envelopes on the condition that they themselves reveal secrets in exchange. These will be posted back to the artists selected; and this ongoing process of ‘selection’ will continuously alter the display throughout the period of the exhibition.  What you choose to put on the front of the envelope, therefore, makes a ‘public’ face for the world. It is primarily on this basis that the selection of your work will be made, while the contents of the envelope delve into ‘private’ interiors within or elsewhere. These ‘insights into the private’ will mainly, but not entirely, be seen one-to-one as exchanges are completed.
MEDIA: free
ENVELOPE SIZE: Standard business envelope sizes are our preferred maximum, however, the preference is not a restriction.
PRIVACY: Anyone concerned about their address being publicly revealed should use a work, gallery or other proxy address.
DETAILS PAGE: For our use, please include a with each envelope, the following:
1. Name, address, email contact, facebook, etc.
2. What is the name of your work?
3. From whom, and by what means (e.g. facebook or other) did you first hear about The SECREt eXCHANGE?
4.   What are the areas of your ‘practice’ (in prioritized order)?
5.   Include any other information, verbal or visual, of your choice, including, if you wish, the back of the page.
TO WITHHOLD DETAILS: from the public, If you wish, please ‘highlight’ those details to be withheld.
Leave the bottom 1/3rd of the page blank for our additional notes: when displayed, when exchanged, to whom, etc.
DETAILS PAGES SIZE:  Pages are A4-size vertical. North Americans should use Legal Size which can be cut down to A4 (8 ½ “x 11 ¾).   A margin for binding of 4 cm (roughly 1 ¾”) should be left empty on the left-hand side of the page (visuals only need ½ that amount). The backs of sheets may also be used for additional material of your choice. When secrets are sent additionally to the initial two, the enclosed sheets only need your name, address, title of work – and whatever else you choose to include, leaving the bottom 1/3 empty.
DO NOT SEAL THE ENVELOPE.  So that the Details Page may be removed. Envelopes can, if needed, be kept closed with vertical strips of sticky tape.
DOCUMENTATION: Exchanged secrets and documentation will be sent to you. Your early and ongoing responses for the Exchange are hoped for.
LIST YOUR PARTICIPATION by friending facebook/ The SECREt eXCHANGE; establish a record of your work by scanning, photographing or copying relevant parts (tantalizing, intriguing) for your own pages and ours on facebook or send to not.terryreid@hotmail.com   We also suggest that you keep copies of work for your own exhibitions, publication, publicity, other and archival purposes.
DEADLINES: These dates are the end days for the exhibitions so that contributions can continue to arrive throughout the shows.  In Sydney, the MCA will be presenting Tell Me Tell Me at the NAS Gallery, opening Jun 15 through to 24 Aug, and in Seoul, the NMCA is presenting from Nov 8 to 19 Feb.

SCHOOLDAYS IN ARTLIFE  (four perfs)
Theme:
From time to time the Netherlands are hyped up with the Van Gogh fever. In particular the region where I live is flooded with interest in every spot, where Vincent van Gogh printed his footsteps. Van Gogh was born here, grew up and went to school in several villages around me. With mixed feelings I am happy to be in the eye of the hurricane. No strong whirlings yet in Van Gogh's schooldays. He attended secondary school in Tilburg. The school is named Koning Willem II College after a Dutch king and in Van Gogh's days it was located in his former palace. Van Gogh was one of the very few students at the time -  from 1866 to 1868 -- good marks. Suddenly Van Gogh vanished from the schoolrecords into his wandering life, leaving us behind uncertain. There is only a school photo left with Vincent van Gogh in the foreground.
*Is your schoollife traceless in your artlife?*  I am a teacher of history and morphology of art at this school. Art
education at the school where I teach young people is a very old tradition. Van Gogh had his first drawinglessons from my predecessor. In 1990 I based a mail art project on this fact. I am very proud to be an art teacher in this particular historic environment. Now I want to reanimate the project. For the SCHOOLDAYS IN ARTLIFE project, please use or represent an _art_efact tracing your own schooldays as a basis of your contribution.

Planet Earth is a large island with a huge ocean around!   (four perfs)
Theme:
Artists from this world are invited to submit an ORIGINAL work, subject to the following idea:
PLANET EARTH IS A LARGE ISLAND WITH A HUGE OCEAN AROUND!
This theme is based on the idea that the planet is a living organism where globalization brings everything and everyone together, and that technology, regardless of its effect, shortens time and space, making communication between peoples, races, cultures and religions easier. This calls us to the idea of concentrating the 5 continents in one, with one ocean, making us even closer together and consciously reconnecting us with the planet, leaving us to the Gaia Hypothesis, proposed by James Lovelock in the 60's, arguing that the planet is a superorganism, a similar idea already shared by ancient civilizations.
