DATED MAILART CALLS last updated June 29, 2009
Selection for inclusion on this page is based upon a number of criteria. I have instituted a general review of the calls on this page purely as a means to aid those new initiates who have little or no experience with mailart. Some of the considerations that I use are if the call is targeted at visual art, whether the work will be exhibited, if there will be documentation, and if there is a known history of coordinating. If you like to explore, submit to any call purely for the sake of play and with no expectations.
one perf - unknown or insufficient information given two perfs - may lack some of the qualities of a complete call three perfs - good call four perfs - known coordinator, or with artistamp history five perfs - exceptional
If you have a call that you wish to have considered for listing here and it includes: a deadline to be received, an exhibition in a public space and mailed documentation for participants, please send it to me at the following address and include “mail art call” in the subject line. Listing is not automatic.

BZZZOING! (five perfs) Theme: Future Sounds & Music By Mail. 2009 marks 100 years since the first Manifesto of Futurism. In 2009 the 100th issue of Arte Postale! will be published. Arte Postale! is a mail art magazine that I started thirty years ago, in October 1979. What puts the two events in relation is sound: Futurist Luigi Russolo’s "Manifesto The Art of Noise" is a milestone in the history of the experimental and weird sounds that I have been promoting since the early Seventies. My journalistic work has appeared in a long string of publications (Rockerilla, Velvet, Vinile, Urlo, Sonora, Underground, Rumore, etc.). Music was also the theme of the first three issues of Arte Postale!, so I return to the subject in this open invitation to contribute to the hundredth issue.
To participate in Arte Postale! 100 you must: Send a mail art work that produces futuristic sounds or music (works that do not produce actual sounds will not be accepted).
and / or
Create an experimental musical instrument and record an original sound piece, then send the recording (on cd-r) with a photo of the instrument and/or send the instrument itself: in the summer 2009 it will be played live by the BAU Artkestra in a public performance in Viareggio, documented in the magazine.
and / or
Send 100 copies in the size of a cd booklet (12 x 12 cm) of an original mail art work on the theme “Future Sounds & Music”. The materials submitted will not be returned. Documentation: A copy of Arte Postale! 100 will be mailed free to all participants. Info: vittorebaroni@alice.it Deadline to be received: June 30, 2009.

Rayuela (four perfs) Theme: Rayuela is a game that is played simularly in most parts of the world. Its origin is not known with certainty, but it is related to the well-known linear games in the days of the Aegean, Greek and Roman civilizations. According to one of the known versions, rayuela was invented by a Spanish monk, who wanted to symbolize the beginning of life, the current life with all its difficulties and alternatives, death, purgatory in the waiting room of hell and the final goal... heaven This makes some think that rayuela could have had a concrete astrological sense. Rayuela is called different names in various countries... calderón, cox cox, futi, traquenele, telazarranea, reigns blackberry, lame leg, infernáculo, pitajuela, mariola, hopscotch etc. In Chile the flame fights or huche; in Colombia golosa or float; in Portugal game of the devil or game of the dead man; in Italy the flame world; in Venezuela the game of the Old man; in Mexico Disk. I'm planning on another 4 issues this year, and if your work hasn't shown up in one yet, it's coming. Size/Format: If you're interested, send small objects / multiples / images in an edition of 50 - I'd really like to see a wide variety - maybe even sound or video work on cd . Please insure that the work contains your name, signature or stamp so that we know who it's from, - It could be a fun project, and a way for us all to connect a little more. Documentation: As your work is included, you get a full copy as well. A complete kit will be sent to everyone who contributes, along with a list of participating artists. Archives: We have people who will archive the editions.... I had a great meeting this week with the curator at the Contemporary Museum in Chicago , they have put a copy of every issue in their permanent collection, and are continuing to archive as we publish new kits - also the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Petersen Archive in Copenhagen, and 17 others worldwide !!! lets keep this going !!!! Heebee Jeebeeland in the 4th Dimension (four perfs) Theme: When I was a kid, there was an old cartoon I saw many times on TV. All manner of mayhem went on until the sun shone again at dawn and the dancing pranksters rushed back to their original spots and the wallpaper became still again. It is in the vicinity of that realm that Heebee Jeebeeland exists. Please send Mail Art that needs to live in Heebee Jeebeeland . Snail mail only please.
